| Der Reichstag -the German Parliament |
| The German parliament building has a long history. It took 10 years to build the parliament, and 5 December 1894 it was finished. In 1933 it burnt down and 12 years later the Red Army captured it. The Soviets saw it as a symbol for the Germans, and one of the most famous pictures of WWII is when the Soviet flag was raised on the building. A picture of it can be found here. Between 1957 and 1972 the parliament was repaired, and in 1995 the couple Christo covered it with big tarpaulins. The idea was of course to make the building good-looking again. The British star architect Sir Norman Foster designed a glass cupola and just in time for Berlin becoming the capital of the reunited Germany in 1999 the cupola was finished. In picture 1 Der Reichstag can be viewed from Potsdamer Platz. Today there is a tall building in the middle of the picture, but I took the picture in March 2003. In Picture 2 just in front of the parliament and in the last picture from the balloon. |
