Schwerin
Schwerin is the capital of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the northernmost state of the former GDR (DDR). Schwerin has a wonderful castle and a few monuments. The city centre is quite ok, even though it is small, and there is particularly one shopping centre that was terrific: der Wurm (the Worm). On the other side of the road there are some dilapidated buildings, which is quite a common sight in eastern Germany.
