| Svappavaara - a Mining Village |
Svappavaara is a village 48 km south of Kiruna. There are not many inhabitants around, only 600. If they do not work in the mine they probably commute to Kiruna every day. What sights are there in Svappavaara? Apart from the obvious, the nature and the mine, there are the old mining mountain, the church and Ralph Erskine's house Ormen långe (=the long snake). Unfortunately there are not many who live in it, so sometimes there have been talks about pulling half of it down! Initially they thought about building three of them, but that came to nothing. Many of my relatives live in Svappavaara. My grandparents have lived in the white brick house, so I love it a lot. Many villagers have a cottage by the river Kalixälven, so therefore there are a lot of images depicting life there. For more information about Svappavaara, please go to the Kauppi page. |
